ABOUT THE GOOD STEER

Since 1957, The Good Steer has been providing customers with outstanding food, a warm and cozy décor … and the type of friendly, welcoming service that can only be found at a family owned-and-operated restaurant that prides itself on being a longstanding part of the local community. With four separate (and equally quaint) rooms for dining, The Good Steer seats up to 240 people … and is one of Long Island’s most popular destinations for those seeking a great meal in a great atmosphere … and a chance to enjoy some of the greatest burgers, steaks and world famous “onion rings” on Long Island.

A “GOOD” HISTORY …

The Good Steer first opened its doors in February, 1957 – the creation of restaurateurs Robert B. and Elizabeth McCarroll. The restaurant (which began as an “upscale hamburger stand” with roll-down garage doors) became an instant success -- and favorite dining destination in the community. In fact, thanks to its prime location on Jericho Turnpike in Lake Grove (then the gateway to The Hamptons), it soon became a favorite destination for celebrities such as E.G. Marshall, Farley Grainger, Bert Lahr, Bert Parks, the Gabor sisters, Ava Gardner and Maurice (Private Doberman) Grossfeld – all who made “The Steer” a frequent stopping off place.

In 1965, The Good Steer underwent a major refurbishing – enlarging the kitchen and transforming the ambiance of the restaurant to reflect the “country charm” that customers were seeking. However, one thing that stayed intact was the McCarroll’s commitment to providing their customers with a great meal at a great value -- giving customers the feeling that they are dining in a more expensive restaurant while enjoying the highest quality food and beverages at more modest prices.

Through the years, The Good Steer and the McCarroll family have continued to add many new items to their menu (including a wide variety of fish and chicken dishes in addition to its signature steaks and burgers) and have continued to enhance the restaurant’s “cozy charm” and warm, down-home country feeling. Above all, our family has continued to provide other families throughout the region with the type of dining experience that is so valued here on Long Island … and which keeps customers coming back time after time.

…AND 50 YEARS OF “GOOD FOOD” SERVED THE “GOOD WAY”

Using only the highest quality ingredients and a collection of favorite recipes from the past half century, The Good Steer is known for a menu that offers everything from our signature burgers and steaks, to unique salads, fish, chicken and wraps. Everything at The Good Steer is made from scratch. From butchering and dry aging our own steaks, to smoking our own barbeque, to baking our own muffins and breads, the Good Steer is committed to preparing everything on-premises. It’s what we know our customers want. And it’s what we deliver day after day.

Whether its making 150 pounds a day of our famous cole slaw, or going through nearly 3,000 pounds of colossal Spanish onions a week to make our famous French Fried Onion Rings (which are sliced thin, breaded in a secret blend and cooked to crisp perfection), you can be sure that everything is made fresh at The Good Steer. It’s what our customers have come to expect from us at The Good Steer – and another “good reason” why The Good Steer has become a place so many people have come to trust for good food, good value … and a total dining experience that goes far beyond just good.
